This Privacy Policy explains what information Seli collects when you use the Seli app, website, Seli Pilot delivery network and Shemi AI, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it.
Seli Trading Company ("Seli", "we", "us", or "our") is a Nigerian company operating a video-first social commerce platform that lets people discover products, buy and sell, pay through escrow-protected transactions, earn rewards, and grow a verified store - supported by Seli's on-demand delivery network ("Seli Pilot") and an AI listing assistant ("Shemi AI").
This Privacy Policy is designed to help you understand what personal data we process when you use the Seli mobile application, the seli.com.ng website, and any related products, features, tooling or services that link to this policy (together, the "Services"). It also explains the choices you can make about your information.
We process personal data in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA), the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), and - where you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom - the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK GDPR. We are committed to fair, lawful and transparent processing, and to protecting the information you trust us with.
The terms "buyer", "seller" / "merchant", and "pilot" refer to the different roles users can take on within the Services. If you use the Services in more than one role (for example, you both shop and sell), this policy applies to how we process your information in each role.
This policy applies to:
This policy does not cover how third parties (such as payment processors, banks, or other websites and services you visit through links on Seli) process your data. Those parties have their own privacy policies. Where we share information with a third party to provide a service you requested, you should also review that party's privacy practices.
The information we process depends on how you use the Services. We collect only what we need to provide the features you use. The categories below describe what we collect and why.
When you create an account or update your profile, we collect:
To keep the platform trustworthy, some activities require identity verification. When you open a store, register as a pilot, or perform certain high-value or high-risk transactions we may collect (with your consent):
Verification data is processed by us and by trusted third-party identity-verification providers. Some of this data is used solely to confirm your identity, not to build a browsing profile.
When you buy, sell, withdraw funds or use Seli rewards, we collect and process:
To operate the marketplace we collect information generated by your activity:
Seli Pilot matches orders to delivery agents and needs location data to work:
You can revoke location permission at any time through your device settings. If you do, some delivery features (such as live tracking of your job) may not work correctly. We do not collect background location without your permission, and pilots' GPS is active only during assigned jobs.
When you use Shemi AI to generate listings:
When you use the Services, we automatically receive technical information about the device and your interaction with us:
The seli.com.ng website and in-app web views use cookies, pixels, local storage and similar technologies to:
You can control cookies through your browser or device settings, but disabling essential cookies may break parts of the Services.
If you provide us with information about another person (for example, a recipient's delivery address), you confirm that you have the right to share that information and, where appropriate, that they are aware of this policy.
Under applicable data protection law (notably the NDPA/NDPR in Nigeria and the GDPR/UK GDPR where they apply to you), we must have a lawful basis to process personal data. We rely on the following bases:
| Basis | When we rely on it |
|---|---|
| Performance of a contract | To provide the Services you asked for: processing orders, running escrow, matching and tracking pilot deliveries, issuing payouts, and delivering account features. |
| Consent | Where we ask your permission first - for example precise GPS during pilot jobs, optional marketing, cookie personalisation, or processing special-category/verification data in certain cases. |
| Compliance with legal obligations | Where the law requires it: anti-money-laundering and KYC obligations, tax reporting, records required by regulators, and responding to lawful requests from authorities. |
| Legitimate interests | For things like keeping the platform safe and free of fraud, detecting and stopping unauthorised activity, product analytics and improvement, customer support, network security and business continuity - balanced against your rights and expectations. |
| Vital interests | In rare, time-critical situations where we must protect someone's life or physical safety (for example a pilot or delivery safety incident). |
Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing carried out before your withdrawal.
We use the information we collect to operate the Services and improve them, including to:
Shemi AI outputs are your content: we do not use your product photos, prompts or generated listings to train models used to generate content for other users. Where we improve Shemi's quality using aggregated, de-identified data, it is stripped of identities before use.
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the categories of recipients below, and only to the extent needed to provide or protect the Services:
| Category | Why we share | Examples of data |
|---|---|---|
| Other users | To connect buyers, sellers and pilots for transactions and delivery. | Your name, store name, phone number, delivery address, order and listing details, and reviews - shared with the other party to your transaction. |
| Payment processors | To collect payments, release escrow and make auto payouts. | Transaction amounts, escrow status, delivery-confirmation timestamps, bank/payout details. Card details are handled by the processor, not by us. |
| Identity & verification providers | For KYC, BVN checks and fraud prevention during seller/pilot vetting. | Name, NIN/BVN, identity documents, date of birth, address, phone. |
| Cloud, hosting & infrastructure providers | To store data and operate the app, databases, media, notifications and email. | Account, listing, order and log data hosted on their infrastructure. |
| Analytics & product-safety providers | To measure usage, detect bugs and block abuse. | Aggregated usage metrics, device/OS info, crash reports, and anomaly signals. |
| Customer-support & communications tools | To answer tickets and send transactional messages (SMS/intents, email, VoIP). | Contact details, order references and support conversation content. |
| Professional advisers & auditors | For legal, accounting, insurance and audit purposes. | Only that data relevant to the engagement, under confidentiality obligations. |
| Regulators & law enforcement | Where we are legally obliged or to protect rights and safety. | Only what the lawful request requires. |
| Buyers/new owners in a business transfer | In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (Section 16). | Personal data supporting the transferred business, under this policy. |
We require all service providers that receive personal data on our behalf to process it under our instructions, keep it confidential, and apply appropriate security measures.
Our primary operations and data storage are in Nigeria. Some of our infrastructure providers, payment processors and analytics services store or process data in other countries (for example data centres in Europe, the United States or other regions).
Where your personal data is transferred out of Nigeria, we rely on legal frameworks that provide suitable protections, including:
If you are in the EEA or the UK, you can request a copy of the safeguards we use to protect your data when it is transferred internationally by contacting privacy@seli.com.ng.
You can control push notifications, SMS, email, and location permissions from your device settings and within the app. Changing a device setting does not affect data already processed under this policy, but it will stop future collection/use of the affected information.
Where we run advertising on or off the platform and rely on personalised ads, we obtain consent where required and respect your advertising-ID and cookie choices. Opting out does not stop ads - it stops personalised targeting and use of your data for that purpose.
We keep personal data for no longer than is necessary for the purposes described in this policy, taking into account legal, regulatory, tax, accounting and fraud-prevention requirements. Typical time frames are:
| Data | Typical retention | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Account & profile | Until you delete your account | Schedules deletion started automatically once you request it (Section 13). |
| Order, transaction & payout records | Up to 7 years after the transaction, then erased or anonymised | Longer where required by tax or financial regulations, or where a dispute/claim is ongoing. |
| KYC & verification data | Up to 5 years after verification or account closure | Kept to comply with AML obligations and prevent future fraud. |
| Delivery & location records (pilots) | Up to 90 days after each active job | Longer where needed to resolve an ongoing dispute or incident. |
| Shemi AI prompts & outputs | Until you delete them or your account closes | Logs may be kept in de-identified form for safety and quality. |
| Usage & crash logs | 30–90 days | Then aggregated/de-identified. |
| Marketing preferences & opt-out records | As long as needed to honour your choice | E.g. suppression lists are kept even after account closure. |
| Support chats & call recordings | Up to 3 years from last contact | Longer if referenced by a legal proceeding. |
When retention periods pass we securely delete or irreversibly anonymise the data, so it can no longer identify you. Legal hold orders suspend deletion until the hold is lifted.
The Services are not directed at children. You must be at least 18 years old to create a Seli account, open a store, or register as a pilot. Where local law sets a higher age (for example 16 or 18) for the data subject, we apply the higher threshold.
We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under the applicable minimum age. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data without the consent of a parent or guardian, contact us at privacy@seli.com.ng and we will take steps to remove the information.
We use technical, organisational and administrative safeguards appropriate to the risk, including:
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. Please help protect your account by using a strong, unique password, enabling any offered two-factor authentication, and never sharing your delivery codes or verification codes with anyone.
Depending on where you live and the law that applies to you, you may have the following rights over your personal data:
| Right | What it lets you do |
|---|---|
| Access | Receive a copy of the personal data we hold about you and information about how we process it. |
| Rectification | Correct inaccurate or incomplete information (for example update your phone number or store address). |
| Erasure | Ask that we delete your data where the legal conditions are met. This is not absolute - some data must be kept for legal or transactional reasons. |
| Restriction | Ask us to pause processing of specified data while a dispute about it is resolved. |
| Portability | Receive the data you gave us in a structured, machine-readable format and (where technically feasible) transmit it to another service. |
| Objection | Object to processing based on legitimate interests, including analytics, and to direct marketing. |
| Withdraw consent | Where processing relies on consent (e.g. precise location, marketing), withdraw it at any time without penalty. |
| Complaint | Lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) or your local supervisory authority. |
Account deletion: deleting your account closes your access and starts deletion of your account/profile data. Transaction, payout and KYC records required by law or for fraud prevention are retained in line with Section 10 and not removed by account deletion.
We use automated systems in a few areas. Where a decision is made solely by automation and has a legal or similarly significant effect on you, we provide a way to request human review and to contest the decision:
If you believe an automated decision has affected you unfairly, email privacy@seli.com.ng with details and we will arrange a manual review.
The Services may contain links to third-party websites, stores, payment pages, verification portals, or app-store listings. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties. Once you leave Seli, the third party's own privacy policy and terms apply.
Communications between buyers, sellers and pilots that happen outside Seli (for example direct WhatsApp or phone calls) are not covered by this policy - we encourage you to keep transaction conversations inside the app where possible.
If Seli is involved in a merger, acquisition, reorganisation, financing, or the sale of all or part of our business, your personal data may be transferred as part of that transaction. Before any such transfer where permitted by law, we will provide appropriate notice via the app, website or email, and the recipient must continue to process your data in line with this policy (or a materially similar, applicable one) and applicable law.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our services, technology, legal requirements or business practices. When we do:
Questions, requests and complaints about this Privacy Policy or our data practices are handled by our data protection team. You can reach us at:
If you are not satisfied with how we handled a privacy matter, you may contact the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) - the regulator responsible for enforcing the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 - or your local data-protection supervisory authority. For individuals in the EEA or UK, you can also complain to your national supervisory authority.
